The term gatte refers to dumplings made of gram-flour (besan). These are shaped (often into long cylinders, then sliced) and boiled or partially cooked.

The dumplings are then cooked (or simmered) in a spiced yoghurt- or curd-based gravy (in the more traditional version) or alternate gravy variations

It originates from the arid regions of Rajasthan, where fresh vegetables were historically less available, so gram-flour dumplings served as a substitute
